West of Ole Enlgand is a family-owned equestrian supply business with three generations providing English and Western with the best of both worlds
for horse and rider.
Founded in 1974 by Lillian Graves and family managed and operated through the years, West of Ole England has earned the reputation in the equestrian community as being “the best of both worlds.” They cater to the budding horse population, offering residents of Martin and surrounding counties, and now via internet, a global resource for the rider and horse. They identify with both Western and English riding lifestyles, stocking top of the line apparel, footwear, tack and saddlery and all the essentials necessary to correspond with your riding style . The Graves family are authorized dealers representing numerous well known equestrian suppliers. Leading manufacturers include Wrangler, Stetson, Justin, Ariat, Bates, Boulet, Montana, Luchesse, and Brighton, to name a few.
Arriving in Stuart, Florida in 1972, Richard Graves, Lillian’s husband, was first to come having accepted a job as a real estate appraiser with a Stuart based savings and loan. Lillian stayed behind in St. Joseph, Missouri to close down their residence there and to give birth to their youngest son, John, now the store’s GM. With babe in arms, she followed shortly thereafter and began planning her future. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, a childhood love of horses, and retail experience acquired while working in the family St. Louis antique store, Lillian opened West of Ole England. The early location was in an old house on the east side at the foot of the old Palm City bridge now occupied by a boat dealer. West of Ole England quickly outgrew its birthplace and in 1979 Lillian moved the store to its present location in the Bruner Plaza on Monterey Rd. In 2006 they added another 2000 square feet which gave them much needed space to accommodate their steady growth making the total retail space some 4500 square feet under roof.
In more recent years, annual surveys conducted by a leading trade publication that serves the national equestrian community, has ranked West of Ole England among the top industry leaders in overall product sales.
West of Ole England has actively supported as well as participated in community fundraising projects. Their generosity has benefited both private and public institutions in the healthcare, education and social sectors as well as for individuals or families who have a special need. West of Ole England supports this type of giving with in-kind donations with a value of more than $10,000.00 annually. Some of these beneficiaries have been the American Cancer Society, Martin County Fair Association, Martin County School system, Humane Society, House of Hope, and 4C’s.
Lillian and Richard, college sweethearts while at the University of Missouri, are proud of their business and community reputation. By insisting that West of Ole England clients are provided the most satisfying, professional, buying experience, the Graves’ plan to keep it that way. They have two married children, Kim and Kevin, both having participated in the growing family enterprise at one time or another. John, the youngest, leads the staff of equine qualified sales associates and oversees the day to day operations of this unique equestrian store. Mr. and Mrs. Graves live in Tropical Farms and with her equestrian background and his child and boyhood experience growing up on a Missouri farm their at home caring for their three horses and minding the pastures of their seven acre ranch.
West of Ole England is located in the Bruner Plaza on Monterey Road less than one mile west of US Highway #1 in Stuart, Florida.
